Refresh rate is how many times per second a monitor redraws the image. For years 60 Hz was the standard; today, common office monitors and laptop displays handle 90, 120, or more — except the system doesn't always turn the higher rate on by itself. After connecting a new cable, going through a dock, or a reinstall, it likes to fall back to the safe bet of 60 Hz. The result: hardware capable of buttery-smooth scrolling running at half speed — and you have no idea, because "it works fine somehow." The check takes a minute and belongs on the short list of things to verify right after plugging in a monitor.

How to do it

  1. On Windows, open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display settings, select the monitor, and under Choose a refresh rate pick the highest value offered.
  2. On Mac, go to System Settings → Displays and set the Refresh Rate field for the relevant monitor to the maximum.
  3. If the highest value is missing from the list, the bottleneck is usually somewhere in the signal path: an old HDMI cable, a cheap adapter, or a dock that can't carry the higher rate at full resolution. Try a different cable (DisplayPort usually handles the most) or connect directly.
  4. For a laptop, you'll find the same setting for the built-in display — manufacturers sometimes lower it by default for battery life. There's no reason to avoid the higher rate while plugged into power; on battery, expect somewhat higher power draw, or leave it on a dynamic mode if your device offers one.
  5. You can test the difference instantly: grab a window and shake it, or scroll quickly through a long page. At 60 Hz, text blurs into a smear while moving; at 120 Hz, it stays readable.

A typical scenario

A student named Alex bought a 144 Hz monitor for his laptop, plugged it in with the included HDMI cable, and worked at 60 Hz for six months — he never checked settings because the picture "looked fine." Then a friend showed him the refresh rate menu: switching to 144 Hz changed how documents scrolled and how the mouse moved so noticeably that, in hindsight, Alex could hardly believe he hadn't noticed the difference before. It had nothing to do with gaming — just the fact that his eyes track moving text all day.
