Obsidian: the daily note as a safety net for your day
Notes scattered across your day need one place to land — otherwise they end up on scraps of paper, in your phone's notes app, and in three different files, and you never find them again. Obsidian's daily note solves that problem simply: there's one page for each day, open the whole day, where absolutely everything lands without you having to think about exactly where it belongs.
A typical scenario
Developer Ondřej takes notes from calls throughout the day, jots down refactoring ideas, and saves links to documentation he still wants to read. Without one central place, these small things end up scattered across Slack, his phone's notes app, and paper notes on his desk — and most of them get lost before he ever gets back to them. With a daily note, Ondřej keeps one page open all day and just writes everything into it as it comes up, without thinking about which folder or note it belongs in. In the evening or on the weekend, if he has time, he sorts the important stuff into permanent notes — and whatever he doesn't sort still stays findable through full-text search.
How to do it
- In Obsidian's settings, turn on the Daily notes core plugin under Core plugins.
- Add a daily note icon to the sidebar so you can reach today's page with a single click from anywhere in the app.
- Write everything that occurs to you or that you run into during the day into the daily note: call notes, ideas, things still to be done, links to sources.
- A date format in the file name (say, 2026-08-11) keeps notes sorted chronologically on their own, with no manual renaming or moving needed.
- In the plugin settings, you can also choose a custom template that gets automatically inserted into every new daily note, so you don't start from a blank page every time.
- Daily notes can be linked back to permanent topic notes using double brackets — if you mention a project or concept in a daily note that has its own dedicated page, just link to it that way, and both notes stay connected going forward.
The best tools
- The Daily notes core plugin in Obsidian — a built-in, free feature; just turn it on once in settings.
- The Templater plugin — for more advanced daily note templates with automatic date filling, links to yesterday's note, and similar.
- The Periodic Notes plugin — extends the daily-note concept to weekly, monthly, or yearly overviews too.
- The Calendar plugin panel — shows a monthly overview of all your daily notes with quick jumps between them by clicking a specific date.
What you get out of it
- Time: an estimated ten minutes a day you'd otherwise spend searching for where you wrote something down, or rewriting lost notes.
- Peace of mind: the certainty that whatever occurs to you has somewhere to land, without having to decide right away where it belongs.
- Fewer lost ideas: small things that would otherwise stay on a scrap of paper or in your head now have one permanent home.
- Findable even without sorting: even unsorted notes can be tracked down later through full-text search by date or keyword.
Pro tip
A daily note template with three simple sections is enough: Tasks, Notes, Tomorrow. The Tomorrow section acts as a bridge between days — whatever you write there is waiting for you right at the start of the next daily note.
